Social work Seminar on

“Social Change and Social Development; challenges for social work ”
BIRDS and BIRDS College:

BIRDS in its full name Belgaum Integrated Rural Development Society – Naganur is a leading development organization based in Belgaum district of Northern Karnataka and operating at South India level. Being an organization committed to integrated social development, BIRDS has promoted different programs in the field of education (both formal and Non formal), disability welfare, agriculture development, HIV and AIDS Intervention, Health, Community Organization and so on. In the field of formal education BIRDS runs Residential school from first to tenth standard, Junior Technical School and college of social work.

With an objective of training rural youth in professional social work and building trained manpower for working in the field of development, BIRDS started College of Social Work at the graduate level. The college was started as first of its kind under Karnataka University in the year 1991. This institution is one among very few rural based colleges all over India and second college of social work in Karnataka when started. So far, 485 students graduated from this college are enjoying respectful positions in their professional/vocational life. Some of them have started their own NGO and are contributing directly of the social development.

From the year 2008-09, we have started Masters program in social work with affiliation from Karnataka University. Currently we have twenty students enrolled into MSW first semester. Together with imparting professional and academic training in social work, college also promotes various informal and non formal opportunities (with help of its mother organization) for the students to participate and practice the components of social work which they study inside their class room.

Background of the Seminar:

The BIRDS BSW college and PG department of social work as an integral part of BIRD society has been decided to held three day seminar on the theme “social change and social development: challenges for social work”. To address on rapidly changing social structure and on the social development and to explore the challenges for social work on these and other related issues help students and faculties helps in greater extent. We expect principal and faulty members and students from your institution to participate in the seminar. The registration forms enclosed herewith, please send it duly filled on or before 25th of march 2009.
The three day seminar invites educationalists. Students from social work colleges. And students are expected to present papers on the theme “social change and social development challenges for social work”. An expert panel will screen and select the papers to be presented at the seminar.

Objectives of the Seminar:

To provide an opportunity for students of social work colleges to interact with each other and learn from sharing,
To develop an increased understanding about the recent trends and challenges in professional social work.
To debate on various issues concern to social development and find out successful ways and means of handling them,
To create an opportunity for schools of social work with in the jurisdiction of Karnataka University, to meet and discuss the issue of organizational concern and strengthen the process of networking,
To create an opportunity for the students of social work to exhibit their talents and get positive re-enforcement.

Paper Presentation:

With an objective of providing an opportunity for participants for debating on various issues of concern to social development and find out ways and means of handling them, it is planned to devote some time during the workshop for paper presentation of students. Following are some of the themes identified for students to focus their paper.

Changing social systems and social problems,
Social work practice in different settings like Hospital, schools, etc.
Corporate social responsibility,
Social work and labour welfare,
Empowerment of weaker sections in communities,
Child rights and societal response,
Promotion of social justice.

Students can focus on developing papers on above theme or document and present their work experience in the above identified fields. Each college can make one presentation and each speaker will be given only 10 minutes to speak. Abstract of the paper to be presented must be sent along with registration form with in the given time (with in 100 words). Final paper should not exceed more than three pages in A4 size paper (font 11 in Verdana fonts and single line spacing) and three hard copy of the same should be submitted on arrival. Each paper presenter will be given a certificate of appreciation.


Registration and Hospitality

The registration fee is Rs.150 per head for both students and faculty. It includes materials on conference proceedings lunch, refreshment and accommodation for all the three days. Accommodation will be arranged for out station participants on request on common sharing basis. For further information on registration and hospitality contact us at the earliest via email or phone. Registration fees can be paid through DD in favor of Principal, BSW College, Tukkanatti payable at Gokak or by cash at the time of registration.
